Although it was a bit later in the season than we're used to, we had to uphold our annual tradition of camping at North Landing Beach Campground in Pungo. Friday night was ROUGH... cold wind gusts of 35-40 mph kept us up all night and blew one of the tents into the woods! Our neighbors Patrick, Max, Brooke and Parker get the ULTIMATE CAMPER awards this year for braving BOTH nights. Some of us had to pack up and head home to get some real sleep Saturday night! The kids had a blast as usual.

- DC Ragnar Relay 2011
It was a year ago that a casual Facebook chat with a vet school classmate spawned the idea of creating a team for the Washington D.C. Ragnar Relay, a 200 mile race from Rocky Gap State Park in Cumberland, Maryland to National Harbor in D.C. We formed a team of 12, rented 2 passenger vans, packed tons of gear and food, and started the race at 6 am Friday morning. Our team conquered the mountainous terrain in thick fog and rain, with practically no sleep. Most of us ran up to 20 miles each (and some of us even more) including middle of the night runs. It was more of an adventure than a true race against other teams. Our motto was "Arrive Alive" and we did it! A true bucket list experience!!!

Earlier this week the waves were bigger, but the day mom can get out there with the camera they fizzled out. But he got a few decent ones. Dude, he's stoked!

- Angels For Ellie
One of my long time clients is a young mom recently widowed and going through some tough times. When I diagnosed her young Rottweiler with ligament tears in BOTH of her knees and referred her to a local orthopedic surgeon, the estimate to repair her knees was astronomical. Friends and family (and strangers, too) came together out of compassion for a family and their dog and donated a total of $1226.00 towards the surgeries. The kids held a bake sale in the freezing cold to help raise half of those funds. We thank all of you angels out there... the spirit of compassion and generosity inspires us all to be good to each other and look out for one another, in what ways we can.

Dave Matthews is a local favorite... even if he is from CHARLOTTESVILLE (boo). We had a fun girl's night out at the Virginia Beach Amphitheater, enjoying sangria and good live music. A lot of these pics were taken with an iPhone... so the quality is not so hot.

We were off on another biking adventure with Grandpa Thompson this 4th of July. So we settled for a 6 mile ride in First Landing State Park across the street, after touring Fort Story on foot.
- Blue Ridge Mountain Baptism
We were invited to the baptism of our niece, Katie, (daughter of Greg's brother Brian and his wife Ellen) in Saluda, North Carolina. - Partytime at Iceland!
Our friend Brooke is 9 years old! Yay! She had her party at the local ice rink. We're not experienced skaters, but the kids had a great time! Thanks to Patrick for taking these pics.
- Battle in a Bucket
We celebrated Sarah's 5th birthday a few days early with Grandma and Grandpa Thompson in Raleigh, NC. Grandma also found a fun game for the family to play called "Battle of the Bucket." It was hilarious.
- Welcome Baby Katie!
We are now officially an aunt and uncle (and cousins)! Greg's brother Brian and his wife Ellen are now the proud parents of a baby girl, Katherine "Katie" Hayes Thompson.
- The Girls' First Manicure!
While the boys were off watching a college basketball game, Grandma Thompson treated the girls to their very first professional manicure. The colors they selected were just LOVELY.
- Ben's First NCAA Basketball Game!
Grandpa Thompson and dad took Ben to see his first official college basketball game...the NC State Wolfpack defeated the Virginia Cavaliers! (Yahooooo.) They had a great time!
- Pungo Run
I now have a running buddy, Karen, that I run with twice a week. Usually Karen comes over to my house to run, but today I went over to her place. Karen lives on a farm out in Pungo, a rural community here in Virginia Beach. Thought I'd bring my camera along and see if I could catch any cool shots.
- Ashley's First Limo Ride
Ashley's friend Nicole had quite the 8th birthday party.... a huge pink Hummer limousine came to each of the kid's homes and picked them up, and took them to the movie theater and back! What a spectacle! The kids had a blast.
- Orange Bowl 2009
The Hokies made it to the BCS Orange Bowl this year!! The Springers came over to help us cheer on Va Tech's victory over Cincinatti, 20-7. Yay Hokies!!
- New Year's Eve 2008
The Frenches were kind enough to invite us to spend the Rockin' Eve at their house this year. We laughed at each other playing the Wii Fit, cards, and a hilarious game of Balderdash. Here's to fun filled 2009 packed with more precious memories for all of our friends and family!
- False Cape State Park
You live here over a decade and you think you know a place... and then... a new adventure awaits! False Cape State Park is just 4 or so miles south of Sandbridge Beach. One is not allowed vehicular access through the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. We got there via the "Terra-Gator"... a huge, all terrain vehicle that took us down to the park by driving on the beach. It was a VERY foggy morning... not great for photos... but Dad and I had fun anyway.
- Christmas 2008
Another special holiday for the Thompsons here in Virginia Beach... we are grateful for a wonderful 2008 and look forward to another year filled with love, laughter, and great memories!
- 4th Annual Christmas Cookie Bake-A-Thon
Heidi, Tracey, and Allison did it again this year... spent all day cooking batches and batches of Christmas cookies. Ashley became an honorary member of our baking group!
- Sarah's Preschool Christmas Concert 2008
Could it be that time again? I feel like I was sitting in the audience for the last one a few weeks ago. This is Sarah's last year at Courthouse Academy. I'll miss these precious concerts...
Added at the end of this slideshow is a performance of Ashley and her piano teacher playing "Silent Night."
- Holiday Lights for Grandpa's Birthday
Grandpa Thompson took us all on a special horse and buggy ride down at the Oceanfront for the annual "Holiday Lights at the Beach" event. All the years we've lived here, we've never seen it before. We had a great time. Happy Birthday, Grandpa!
- Our First Christmas Movie Social
Greg just had to have a reason to whip out his new projector... so he set up a big white tarp in our backyard and played Christmas classics like Frosty the Snowman and Elf. One problem... it was BITTERLY cold! Some braved the tundra, while others kept warm inside. Thanks to Patrick and Jackie for buying an ultra big outdoor heater... otherwise Greg would have been outside alone.
- Ben's Holiday Recorder Concert
Mom didn't get to attend this special third grade presentation of holiday songs, but between Greg and our neighbor Patrick, we have some photos and video clips to capture the moment. Thanks, guys!
- Los Cabos, Mexico for Thanksgiving 2008
We spent a week in Los Cabos for the Thanksgiving holiday with Heidi's parents and family. We had a fabulous time, packed with all sorts of fun things and we were surrounded by the beauty of the landscape.
A week to be very grateful for....
- Kids Volleyball Championships Fall 2008
The Whiplash took the championship this season! Great job everyone! The kids were so happy and proud of themselves!
- Happy 9th Birthday, Ben!
It's hard to believe our baby boy is 9 years old. Guess we can't call him baby anymore. Especially since he lost his very first baby tooth on his birthday! Finally! We took Ben and just a couple of his buddies to Pungo Pizza for food and video games... no big party this year. Maybe it'll be an extravaganza for his tenth.
- Our Friend Liam's 6th Birthday was Out of This World!
Tracey and Martin outdid themselves with an astronaut training camp theme for their lil' space nut, Liam. The kids decorated their own jetpacks, had to endure grueling training exercises, flew to Mars to collect samples, and were awarded medals as they returned home to Earth safely (although not quietly). Happy Birthday, Liam!
- The OBX Half Marathon 2008
Heidi completed her third half marathon in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. The race started in Nags Head and finished in one of our favorite towns, Manteo. The weather was perfect... lots of sunshine and not too cold! Time was pretty good... almost the exact time to the second from the last race 3 weeks ago.
- Ashley's First Piano Recital
Ashley has been taking piano lessons for the past several months. Her piano teacher, Anna, organized a recital with 11 of her students at an Assisted Living Center here in Virginia Beach. Everyone enjoyed their performances.
- The Merry M.A.C. at Light the Night 2008
Tracey formed the group "The Merry M.A.C. (Mamas Against Cancer)" and our first event was the Light the Night Walk in support of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We all carried illuminated balloons in honor of those with blood cancer. The weather was perfect and we had a fun evening.
Hope to add more pictures from others later....
- Ben's Word Retirement Party
In an effort to promote the use of better vocabulary, Ben's Language Arts teacher, Mrs. Sims, organized a "Word Retirement Party"... the kids were assigned basic word like "good," "bad," "nice," "said," etc... and they had to retire them from use. They are not allowed to use them in class. Clever!
- Trick or Treat 2008
Another year has gone by and the Kern Court Gang is back again to haunt the neighborhood. This year the Thompson kids all opted for scary creatures... much to the dismay of Great Aunt Elisabeth, who was here for the festivities.
- Ashley's "Temples and Tombs" Concert
Every year the second graders of North Landing Elementary present a program about Egypt called "Temples and Tombs." It's an enjoyable evening for all. We were lucky enough to have two extra special audience members... Great Aunt Elisabeth from Philadelphia and cousin Jason from Seattle.
- Pumpkin Carving 2008
Every year Greg has the kids draw out their pumpkin faces on paper and he carves them out. Our neighbors Patrick and Jackie also had some fun with their pumpkin carving festivities.
- The Navy's Fleet Week Half Marathon
Heidi's second official race was held on the world's largest naval base... Naval Station Norfolk. Would have LOVED to take pictures of some of the amazing sights on this base (such as the impressive aircraft carriers) but cameras were only allowed in certain places. And... I was running. This was a fabulous, well organized race. The weather was gorgeous, and Ben also ran in the Children's Fun Run and had a great time! I cut 20 minutes off my last race time. Yahoo!
- Hunt Club Farms 2008
This year we visited our local "pumpkin patch" here in Virginia Beach with Grandma and Grandpa Thompson. It really isn't a TRUE patch, but it's the best we can do here close by, and the kids have been visiting this place since they were babies. Lots of fun activities for all...
- Virginia Tech Homecoming 2008
Greg's boss was able to procure 2 tickets to the Virginia Tech Homecoming football game for us. We haven't been back to our alma mater for almost 10 years... and we haven't set foot in Lane Stadium since the mid 1990's! So this was a very special treat for us both. The weather was gorgeous, and the campus looked fantastic. One thing we definitely witnessed... HOKIE PRIDE, and we are so proud to call ourselves part of the "Hokie Nation."
- Neptune Festival 2008
The Neptune Festival is one of the premier events here in Virginia Beach in the early fall. Artisans come together to sell their crafts along the boardwalk, and there is a famous sand-sculpting contest. Even the recent Noreaster storm couldn't hamper the fun.
It is also the last beach volleyball tournament of the season. How quickly the summer flew by this year!
- Kayaking/Canoeing with the Drew Crew and Friends
Scott and Kendra invited us on a kayaking expedition in the Intracoastal Waterway. Some of us were in canoes and others in kayaks. We had a couple of minor setbacks (ex. huge logs and debris blocking our path, kids having major meltdowns) but we met the challenges and made it to our destination alive and well.
- Another Season of Soccer for Ben...
Ben's back on the Rush Vipers with Lonnie Bush and Lance Hudgins for another season.
- The Whiplash Back in Fall Action....
Martin and Greg are back coaching the Courthouse Whiplash, a co-ed indoor volleyball team. Both Ashley and Ben are on the team this season.
- Back on the Bus Again...
Summer has come to an end, and the kids are back on the bus again for another exciting school year. Ben's in third grade this year, Ashley in second. Time is flying....
- Labor Day in Richmond, Virginia
For those of you who have looked at our albums the past couple of years, you will remember that we make it an annual tradition to drive to Richmond and visit Maymont Park, an old estate converted into gardens and animal exhibits. We were joined by Grandpa Ken, Grandma Nancy and my sister Britt for this year's visit. We also enjoyed some rock hopping on the James River.
- 2008 Virginia Beach Rock 'N Roll Half Marathon
Heidi and her sister Britt shared the experience of their very first race here in Virginia Beach. It was a huge event.... 22,000 runners.... and a 13.1 mile course. We're very proud to have done it. I hope we do it again.
- Labor Day at the French "Swamp"
Martin and Tracey invited us over for a cookout and a badminton tournament Labor Day weekend. We had a great time. My camera didn't do such a good job so I stole quite a few shots from Tracey and Kendra.
- Zane Freeman's 2nd Birthday
It's hard to believe the little man next door is two years old. Happy birthday to our favorite ball-lover-who's-destined-to be-a-rock-star! We decided to make Zane's celebration into "summer's last hurrah before back to school" so the kids celebrated with games such as the egg race and toss, and of course the water balloon grand finale.
- East Coast Surfing Championships (ECSC) 2008
There's a bumper sticker we see around here a lot: "Virginia Beach Has No Waves." Funny that Virginia Beach hosts the ECSC every year... we're obviously not known for big waves at all (unless there's a hurricane in the vicinity). But it's a fun event and of course, we like the big beach volleyball tournament! Britt came down to play with us both Saturday and Sunday. Britt and Heidi didn't fare so well on Saturday, but we made it to the finals on Sunday... Britt playing with Greg, Heidi playing with Martin. Yeah for us!
- Tanner Drew's Casino Night
We had fun celebrating Tanner Drew's 6th birthday at her house for "Casino Night." Tanner's parents, Scott and Kendra, are obviously a bad influence on their daughter with their poker addiction! Actually, it was another wonderful party idea and we all had a great time.
- Toyota King of the Beach Tournament
Greg put in a great performance at this year's V2 King of the Beach tournament... taking place right next to the pros of the Toyota Pro Beach East Tournamant. Greg took a very impressive 4th place... considering the top 2 were barely 20 years old (and very tall I might add).
- Bianca and John's Wedding in Philadelphia
Congratulations to Heidi's cousin Bianca on her marriage to John Falcone on August 8, 2008 in Philadelphia, PA. We had a wonderful time with our family.
- Andrew and Erin's Wedding
Congratulations to friends Andrew and Erin on a beautiful wedding ceremony at Lesner Inn in Virginia Beach on August 1, 2008. Beautiful pictures are courtesy of Kendra (of course).
- Nightswimming....
A bunch of us went down to the oceanfront on a weekday night to enjoy the quiet beach in the evening while Greg was playing league beach volleyball.
- The EVP Tour in Virginia Beach
What a surprise... another volleyball related album.
This past weekend the EVP (Extreme Volleyball Professionals) Tour came to Virginia Beach. They had an amateur event as well. Heidi' sister Britt came down for the weekend and we thought we'd give a go at playing. Even though we didn't do well on our net, we had a great time in beautiful weather. Greg and Scott won their division, and on Sunday Heidi and Martin joined forces in co-ed. We mad it to our final but lost... right before the yucky weather rolled in. It was a weekend full of volleyball...
- Yet Another V2 Tournament...
Greg and I played co-ed beach volleyball again this past weekend. We took fourth in the A division. Scott and Kendra played AA so we didn't get to play them (Thank goodness, or we would not have placed). It was so unbelievably hot, I can't remember a time that I've ever felt that exhausted. Our babysitter Kalynne came down to hang out with the kids in the water. Ben is now hooked on boogie boarding.
- Riley's "Christmas in July" Birthday Party
Kendra thought of yet another fun party theme... this time for lil' Riley, who turned four years old. My camera's flash is not working for some reason and many of the pictures I took did not turn out.
- Family Day at Water Country USA
We decided to spend a beautiful Friday up in Williamsburg, VA at Water Country, USA, one of the best water parks in the nation. The bad news is, so did everyone else in the world and possibly from other planets as well. It was so crowded that it became somewhat unbearable so we left kind of early. I think the kids would still say the trip was worth it.
- The Freemans Are Gone.... it's PARTYTIME....
It's become a fact on our cul-de-sac that if you own a pool and you go on vacation or leave your gate unlocked, your house is our next party destination. At least we try to clean up when we leave.
- Beautiful Sunflowers...
The sunflowers are out, especially around the Outer Banks in North Carolina. A couple of shots were taken outside of the Outer Banks Brewery Station and a couple were taken on our way back home... we stopped and snapped a few photos on someone's private property (the kids were MORTIFIED.)
- Volleyball Virginia's Mid-Atlantic Zonal Championships
Greg and Scott won 1st place in the Men's A Division... congratulations, guys! Also, congrats to Scott and Kendra for winning the Co-Ed division. These great pictures are courtesy of Kendra Drew.
- A Day in Nags Head, NC
Our friends the Springers rent a beach cottage in Nags Head every year, and they were kind enough to invite us for a visit. Diane took quite a few pictures of the kids at the beach that I'll have to steal later. The weather was a bit dreary, but a little rain never stops the kids from having fun in the water. Ben decided to participate in the "Pool Olympics" with some other kids there on summer vacation.
- Fourth of July in Purcellville
We had a wonderful weekend visiting Heidi's parents in Purcellville, VA. Aunt Britt worked hard on setting up lots of fun and games to celebrate Independence Day.
- Volleyball Virginia's Sand Socks Tournament
Another summer weekend, another volleyball tournament. Greg and Scott played AA on day one (we don't need to update you on their record), and then on day two Heidi played with Zac Freeman (our 11 year old neighbor) while Scott and Kendra won the co-ed A Division.
- Beach Days with the Philadelphia Powers
Every summer we are blessed with a visit from Heidi's cousin Sonya and her family. The girls Sofia and Julia are our girls' ages, so it's great fun for the kids to get together and play. The first day we went to Sandbridge Beach, then the next day the Virginia Beach Oceanfront (Greg was in a volleyball tournament, as usual). The older Freeman kids came along to catch some waves with us.
- "Around the World" Camp
The Samanthas are at it again. After a successful trial camp last week, they organized a "real deal" 3 day activity camp with the theme "Around the World."
- Kayak Expedition to Back Bay
Grandpa Ken loves to kayak, and he invited Greg, Heidi, and Ben to join him. We launched from just outside of Sandbridge Beach and followed a waterway out to Back Bay. We saw lots of neat critters including otters and a wide variety of birds.
- Ashley's Early Birthday with Grandma and Grandpa
Grandma Nancy and Grandpa Ken came to Virginia Beach for a visit and we celebrated Ashley's birthday with them, a week early. Ashley had a very special present that everyone enjoyed.
- A Day at Chesapeake City Park
We were brave and brought a bunch of kids and some lunch to Chesapeake City Park. We have to keep this crazy crowd pretty occupied during the summer...
- The "Samanthas" Summer Camp
Our next door neighbors (Samantha Freeman and Samantha Fuller) organized a trial "summer camp" for the cul-de-sac kids. It was a morning full of fun activities and they finished it off with a talent show. What a wonderful idea. The kids had a blast.
- Whiplash End of Season Party
We celebrated the end of a great spring season of volleyball with of course... more volleyball. And cookies and ice cream too.
- Scott and Kendra's 5th Annual Ice Cream Social
Another year of ice cream, fun, and games.
- Kid's Volleyball Championship
What an amazing Championship match between the Whiplash and the Wolves. The Wolves took it from us... but BARELY. They won by two points. The parents are still recovering from watching this thriller. What an AMAZING effort by both teams!!!
- Last Days of School...
It's hard to believe another school year is winding down. The kids had a great year... Ashley with Mrs. Colon and Ben with Mr. Gurvich.
- Jacob's 7th Birthday was a Splash...
Jacob Springer turned 7 years old and had a huge inflatable waterslide in his backyard to celebrate...
- Spring Soccer: Rush Vipers
Yet another season of soccer for Ben. He joined friends Max Hudgins and Will Bush under Coach Lonnie Bush and they formed the Rush Vipers. All three boys are 8 but got moved up to U-10. The first game was rough (they lost 9-2 or something like that) but Ben scored and that always smoothes a loss over. The boys are really developing their game and having fun out there. The playing field is bigger, the goals are bigger, they have goalies and referees. This is the big time now!
- Oma Wilma's Memorial Service
Heidi flew out to Iowa to be with her dad and his family for his mother's Memorial services. It was so good to see the Heilman brothers together, even under difficult circumstances. The service was perfect and honored a very special member of our family.
- Fun on Memorial Day
We had a great time for our third (or is this our fourth??) annual Volleyball (and more) party in our backyard. The weather was perfect and there were all sorts of activities for everyone to keep busy, and according to Ben, there were lots of "cool desserts."
- Buckroe Beach Volleyball Tournament
Tidewater Volleyball sponsored a 3 day tournament out at Buckroe Beach in Hampton. It's a nice beach on the Chesapeake Bay. The weather was absolutely perfect both days that we participated.
- Our 13th Anniversary Getaway
Greg kept it a secret for over a week about a trip we were taking to celebrate our 13th wedding anniversary. He did good. He packed the kayak and bikes in the back of the truck and headed out to one of our favorite places.... Manteo, North Carolina. It's on Roanoke Island in the Outer Banks. We had a fantastic time.
- Career Day At School
Once a year the kids get to dress up as a professional of their choice and wear the outfit to school. What a bunch of cuties (or should I say hams?)
- Flat Ben Adventures
Many of us know about the children's book called "Flat Stanley." A little boy is flattened when a bulletin board falls on top of him, and decides that his flattened self can be easily mailed to different places and go on fun adventures. Well, Ben's second grade class has all been flattened... and their adventures have begun.
- A Jungle Party Tonight!
The First Grade Class of North Landing Elementary proudly presents "A Jungle Party Tonight" for our viewing pleasure...
- Images of Great Pond, Maine
There's a project that the government is managing up at the Great Pond Outdoor Recreational Area in Maine. Greg had to go up there to attend a Town Hall Meeting to answer questions. No one showed! Maybe the trip wasn't all for nothing... he got to stay in a cabin and take pictures of the beautiful surroundings.
- Strawberry Pickin'
Kendra and Riley invited us to meet them at Flanagan's strawberry patch in Pungo (a hop, skip and a jump from our house). It's a shame we've never done this before... and practically in our backyard!! Baby Zane came along and helped us pick. The strawberries were beautiful and very delicious!! We'll be back for more!
- More Busch Gardens...
Happy 6th Birthday Parker Richard!! We headed back to Williamsburg to help Parker celebrate his special day. My camera pootered out a little early, so I didn't get as many photos as I would of liked. We had a great time on a cool drizzly day with short lines and a lot of enthusiasm!
- Down at the Beach...
We went down to the beach to enjoy some volleyball and friends. I wasn't good about taking a lot of pics today. I left most of it all to Kendra. She took some great shots and I enjoyed stealing a lot of them. I'm jealous of her new camera and that's all I have to say about that.
- Jump In... the Water's Great!
Those crazy kids. We get a warm Spring day and they get off the school bus, put their bathing suits on, and want to jump in the (unheated) pool. We didn't think they'd last after the first jump, but when you're young and silly.... you're just numb.
- The Whiplash Take the Court...
The Spring volleyball season has officially started! Ashley has joined the Courthouse Whiplash, and Martin is head coach and Daddy Greg is Assistant Coach. Ashley's about half the size of the other girls, but she's doing a good job and we are so proud of her.
- Girls Day Out at Fort Story
What a beautiful day to have off from school. Heidi piled the girls in the car and we were heading down to First Landing State Park when we decided to take a detour and go to Fort Story instead. Fort Story is an older army base with 2 lighthouses (both called Cape Henry) that the public can visit. The girls had fun climbing the older lighthouse, walking the grounds, and dipping their feet in the ocean.
- Norfolk Botanical Garden Spring 2008
We've made it an annual tradition (just how many annual traditions do we have?) to visit the Norfolk Botanical Gardens in the spring when the azaleas are in full bloom. This year we met the Frenches there and brought along lil' neighbor Max. They maintain this place beautifully and I hope it will be a treasured memory for our kids coming here every year with their friends... running through the garden paths, seeing all of the amazing wildlife, and appreciating the breath-taking beauty nature has to offer.
- Bryce Walsh's 8th Birthday
Wow, time is flying. Ben has known Bryce since they were two years old and wearing diapers in pre-school. Now they're big boys and they're still buddies.
- Spring Hits Our Garden
I was inspired by looking at my cousin's photo album of the blooming trees outside their new home. I ran out this morning and took a few pictures of the plants and flowers around us that are so beautiful this time of year. I'll probably add more to this as more thing start to bloom (like the mini roses and the Starlight Jasmine...)
- Adventures in Mold Removal
So, we got a letter from our homeowner's association telling us we need to get rid of the mold stains on our roof. Greg thinks he can save us a few bucks by doing this himself. As we all stared on in horror, he decided that balancing a sprayer (with lung burning chemicals), container, and rope on a steep incline many feet above the ground was a little too risky. Looks like we'll be calling a professional for this one.
- Zachary Fuller's 14th Birthday Party... Surprise!!!
It's not a surprise it is time for yet another birthday party for one of our kids on the cul-de-sac. But this WAS a surprise for Zac. His dad brought him home and we were all waiting for him. Hard to believe our favorite clown-lover is 14.
- Happy 7th Birthday Caroline!
Ashley's buddy Caroline turned 7 years old and had her 3rd annual "dog party." This party is such a hit... the kids dress up like dogs, make a doggy craft, and play dog games. They left with home-made puppy chow.
- A Family Day...
Greg had a day off and we decided to start using this year's season passes at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. After our drive back we headed down to the beach for some volleyball and fishing. We had a great day together.
- Easter at Topsail Island, North Carolina
Heidi's cousin Thomas invited us to stay at a beach house in North Topsail Beach, near Wilmington, North Carolina. Despite Heidi getting very sick, we all had a nice weekend in a very nice place.
- Annual Cul-De-Sac Egg Hunt
Samantha and Sam put on their second annual egg hunt in the cul-de-sac. The kids had a great time finding eggs and participating in funny contests.
- Sarah's Spring Concert at Courthouse Academy
Every year Sarah's preschool puts on a concert in the spring. I dressed Sarah up in one of the beautiful dresses Grandma gave her and as you can see, she was one of the only kids who didn't freak out on stage.
- Party Time After School!
It's party time when Aunt Britt babysits!
- Sarah Takes a Snooze
Sarah looks like an angel when she sleeps. We had to catch these sweet expressions on film.
- Who's the New American Idol???
Britt brought her Wii version of American Idol to Virginia Beach. This game is NOT for people who can't laugh at themselves. And in the case of Greg, we can ALL laugh even harder. Put on your Depends before you watch Greg's version of "Bohemian Rhapsody."
- The Dog Days of Spring
We've been having a lot of fun with the dogs. Britt came down for the weekend with her new family member, Rutger (aka "Rudy"), and Rudy has become an honorary member of the Man Club. We also took the boys down to Sandbridge Beach for the pups' first romp in the sand.
- Another Bounce House Jumpfest! Happy 4th, Sarah!
Last year Sarah and her friend Danny had their 3rd birthday party at the Bounce House and guess what the two wanted this year... a repeat!! So... it was like deja vu all over again. Hopefully I'll be able to add some more action shots from friends who also took pics. I was a bit busy meeting and greeting, as well as trying to reign in our group of 22 kids. And for some reason, my camera acted up... so I'm missing some shots of kids like Danny (umm... yeah, the birthday boy.... doh!), Liam, and Dylan. UGH!
- Warm Weather in March...
It was a beautiful day here in Virginia Beach. We're ready for spring! It started off this morning with Jackie's cat Maggie climbing up our tree to catch a bird... (she didn't get it...) and we all had fun out in the sunshine, including Zach Fuller.
- Ashley Goes Rock Climbing with Brooke...
It was our lil' neighbor Brooke's 8th birthday, and she invited some friends to the Rock Gym in Virginia Beach to celebrate. I didn't get to witness it, but the word is that Ashley was brave and suited up, and climbed up! I told Jackie to take pictures for definitive proof.
- Happy 4th Birthday Sarah!
It's hard to believe our youngest is 4 years old now. Friends came over to help Sarah celebrate her big day. She has a party next week but we had to celebrate on her official day.
- And the Oscar Goes To... Patrick!
Beware... if you come over to our house to play "Cranium," we will try to humiliate you with pictures (note: there are never any of us, because we NEVER look ridiculous). Our neighbors Patrick and Jackie are Cranium rookies... but they held their own and almost won it (note: I said ALMOST).
It was a funny night. Patrick was so highly entertaining. He should quit his day job and be a mime on the street.
- More "Man Club" Antics
We had our first nice day (weather-wise) in a long while, so we got the boys together for a "Man Club" meeting in Sandy's backyard. Fritz is the big annoyer, Clancy is the vicious, rabid, attack dog, Gryffin's just lookin' for a good time, and Wilson just wants some peace and quiet.
- More Cute Moments with Fritz...
Our "fur baby" is fitting into the family nicely. One of his favorite times of the day... when we curl up on the couch with the TV on. He snuggles up on your belly, and gives you an occasional kiss to let you know how happy he is.
- The Portsmouth Children's Museum on a Rainy Day
It was pouring rain outside so we met friends Sam, Diane, Jacob, and Dylan down at the Children's Museum in Portsmouth. After a busy morning we ate lunch at The Bier Garden.
- Sarah's "Mini Birthday" with Grandma and Grandpa
It's almost Sarah's 4th birthday and Grandma and Grandpa Thompson were visiting Virginia Beach this weekend. So we had a small party down at the condo, and Sarah had a nice evening eating ice cream cake, opening presents, and spending the night.
- Picture People Session February 2008
Anyone who knows me knows I'm not big into professional portraits... sometimes they just look too "posed." But Greg's mom wanted this for her birthday... and I have to admit, they turned out great! Maybe it's just the kids that are in them.
- Our First Official "Cranium Showdown"
So we agreed that we needed to start an official "game night" once a month with the Frenches and the Webbs. The Frenches pulled an amazing "come from behind" win to take the honors this night... but a re-match is already planned. We can't stand the idea of Martin having bragging rights for too long.
- Adoption Announcement! "Fritz Von Schnauzer" Thompson!
In a moment of complete weakness and desparation (I've been wanting a Schnauzer puppy since....forever...)... I met up with a "backyard breeder" woman from North Carolina and ended up bringing home this adorable but completely un-socialized little man. He's going to take lots of work and encouragement, but you can tell the potential is there.
- Aunt Elisabeth Visits Virginia Beach!
It's been a long while since she's been here... but Heidi's Great Aunt Elisabeth hopped on the train from Philadelphia to visit us for Heidi's birthday. The kids absolutely love being with her.
- Happy 3rd Birthday Kendall!
Our lil' neighbor Kendall turned the big three and invited her buddies to celebrate with her at the Jumping Monkey.
- Sam's Polar Plunge
Our awesome lil' neighbor Sam Fuller raised over $1000 for the Special Olympics (in her brother's honor) and was supposed to participate in the big annual Polar Plunge that took place last weekend...BUT a fever kept her from plunging in! So... her mama set up a special "re-do" the following weekend. She had a great support group and friends shared the agony of the icy cold Atlantic! Way to go guys!
- Introducing... "Gryffin" Anthony!
It's a four legged, furry BOY for the Anthony family. "Gryffin," the 6 month old Miniature Schnauzer moved from Williamsburg to Virginia Beach with a lot of cuteness in tow. He has officially joined the "Man Club" with Clancy and Wilson. The trio had a wild party in Sandy's backyard.
- Our New Kitchen....
It started out with new countertops and sink in December.... and we just kept the ball rolling. It's been a fun project, and we love the finished product. Greg put the cabinet lights up and they make it warm and inviting.
- Omi's Memorial Service
We celebrated the life of our wonderful, beautiful, fun-loving grandmother, aka "Omi", on January 21, 2008 in Bettendorf, Iowa.
- A Stop in Washington, Iowa
Since we were only an hour away from Uncle Digger and Oma, we drove down for a visit. Oma seemed happy to see us and we had a great (but too short of a ) visit.
- Va Beach Hokie Fan Club!!
For Christmas, Greg made all of the kids on the cul-de-sac Virginia Tech T-shirts to wear in support of the Hokies for the Orange Bowl on January 3rd. The neighbors took pictures of our supportive group. We weren't even here.... en route home from Mexico. How wonderful it was to see the kids pull together for the Hokies! Too bad we lost!! Boo Hoo!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Night Out in Cabo
We ventured out to see what the nightlife was like in Cabo San Lucas... and had a great time!
- Casa Santa Maria
We looked at several villas while we were in Cabo... this one was a standout. This may be a future getaway for the family...
- Todos Santos, Mexico
About an hour north of Cabo San Lucas is a town called Todos Santos. It's known as somewhat of an artist's town... so lots of interesting things were for sale. It's also home of the Hotel California (of the song's fame). It's an urban legend, however, that the Eagles wrote the song about this hotel. Despite the horrible service at their restaurant, the food was delicious. I wish we would have had more time to explore more of the shops. The kids were more than happy to stop walking around in the heat.
- Playa Pacifico (A Beach on the Pacific)
While the guys went deep sea fishing, Britt and Heidi took the kids up the Pacific Coast to Todos Santos. On the way we pulled over and walked on one of the beaches. This beach was on the Pacific side, and the water was much rougher and the waves were huge. It was not swimmable... rocks were everywhere and if a wave caught you, there would have been big trouble. But what a sight... watching the waves crash into the rocks. Ben was in heaven... but we were scared to let him wander around. At the beach entrance there was a neat Catholic shrine (they are everywhere alongside the road).
- Big Time Fishin' with the Men
The guys got up at the crack of dawn to go deep sea marlin fishing in the Pacific. The weather was perfect and the water was calm. The name of the 40 ft boat was the Angelina I, and the crew couldn't speak English.... but they knew where to take the guys to find the big ones. They almost caught a huge blue Marlin, but the boat's propeller accidentally cut the line after over an hour of reeling!!! But they made up for it by catching a 9 ft marlin, and a big 4 ft Mahi Mahi!
- More Fun at Playa Palmilla on New Year's Day
There wasn't a day without lots of sunshine. Every day was beach-worthy. Greg's favorite thing (besides marlin fishing) is fish watching (ie, snorkeling). We all packed up our gear and a cooler and headed back to Palmilla Beach to enjoy the water and sun.
- A Day in Cabo San Lucas
Of course, we needed to spend some time in the famous tourist spot. The marina in Cabo San Lucas is surrounded by open restaurants and bars, and lots of shops. Lots of vendors surround you trying to sell dresses, hats, pottery, dolls, whistles, ... you name it. You can walk up to the water's edge and see the fish swimming below. We ate lunch called D' Right Joint. It was fun and festive... and the food was good. We walked around the shops and did a little bit of damage.
- Our Dolphin Encounter
It was so much fun to swim with the dolphins in Mexico! The kids and Britt and Heidi got to have fun with these wonderful creatures. The only pictures we were allowed to have were the pictures the staff took. And they cost us a lot!
- Playa Palmilla ("Palmilla Beach")
Our first morning in Cabo we woke up early and watched the sun rise over the Sea of Cortez. Then we climbed down the 100 or so steps leading to Palmilla Beach. All Mexican beaches are public, but practically no one was there.
- The Glass Bottom Boat at Land's End
After a yummy lunch we all piled into a glass bottom boat for a tour of "Land's End"... the most southern tip of Baja, Mexico. The rock formations are neat... most notably the "arch." The kids loved seeing colorful fish in the clear blue water. We brought snorkeling gear and Greg, Heidi, Britt and Ben jumped off the side and joined the fish. We also saw wild sea lions barking on the rocks nearby.
- Casa Panter: Los Cabos, Mexico
What a way to spend the New Year!! We flew down to Los Cabos, at the most southern tip of the Baja Penninsula in Mexico with Heidi's family. "Los Cabos" means "The Capes." To the west is the Pacific Ocean and to the east is the Sea of Cortez. My dad rented an amazing villa called "Casa Panter" in the Palmilla community, situated between San Jose del Cabo, and Cabo San Lucas. The villa had a breathtaking view of the Sea of Cortez. We all felt like we were in a dream world, or at least on an episode of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous."
- Our Christmas 2007
We had a wonderful Christmas at home in Virginia Beach with the North Carolina Thompsons.
- Happy Holidays with the Frenches
Martin and Tracey had a nice holiday get-together at their house. We enjoyed all the yummies, festive drinks, and great company!
- Iris' Christmas Shin-Dig
Iris watches Sarah two days a week for us. Every year she invites Santa to her house and has a party for the kids. Ben and Ashley were invited too, and a good time was had by all.
- Sarah's Holiday Program at Courthouse Academy
No doubt about it... Sarah loves to sing. She loved performing Christmas songs in the holiday program put on by her preschool.
- Moms Night Out...Censored!
Our Christmas gift to each other... a night out without the kids and husbands... and a limo!
- Ben's First Indoor Soccer Tournament
Ben joined a team called Virginia Rush Fire and they play in an indoor league this winter. They started with the "Frostbite Tournament" at one of the neighboring middle schools. It was a long but exciting day. His team made it to the finals but lost to an excellent (and bigger) team called the SWAT. Ben even played goalie for the first half of the final. I was so nervous I couldn't take pictures.
- Cookies with Santa at NLES
Santa takes time out of his busy schedule to visit North Landing Elementary every year. The kids make cookies and crafts and get pictures with the big fella.
- Happy Birthday Martin!
We celebrated Martin's 41st at the bowling alley on base at Oceana. Tracey made him homemade German Chocolate cake... delicious!
- Colonial Williamsburg in December
Colonial Williamsburg is so quaint this time of year... we love it. How perfect it was that Heidi had a veterinary conference there during what they call the "Grand Illumination"... a time when all of the seasonal decorations go up (everything is natural... no plastic Santas here!) and there are lots of festivities. One of our favorite traditions is to go to one of the taverns for dinner...the menu is traditional for the period, and the staff dresses up and they try to give you a true "colonial" experience.
- Decorating Our Tree...and Wilson too...
We had fun decorating the tree with Grandma and Grandpa Thompson after Thanksgiving. Jackie brought Wilson over in his new red sweater and I thought he looked perfect sitting under the tree. Love that dog.
- The Commonwealth Cup '07
It's always a big game every year, but this year couldn't be bigger... Virginia Tech vs University of Virginia... the winner goes to the ACC Championship game. We cheered our Hokies to victory at the Springers... Tech won 33-21. Yeah Hokies!!!!
- Thanksgiving '07
We spent our Thanksgiving at home in Virginia Beach for the first time in who-knows-how-many years. Grandma and Grandpa Thompson joined us for the big feast. The weather was unbelievably warm (you could feel the icebergs melt up north) so the kids and grown-ups enjoyed some lively games of tetherball, football, and baseball out in the cul-de-sac.
- The Boys Go Bowling...
Since we completely "dropped the ball" and didn't have a party for Ben last year, this year we allowed him to invite a few buddies for bowling. Despite a VERY disorganized start to the party by a VERY sub-standard party hostess, the boys seemed to have a great time. Meanwhile, Ashley and Sarah went with neighbors Patrick and Jackie on their own bowling adventure on base at Dam Neck.
- The End of Yet Another Soccer Season...
So, the Virginia Rush U-8 Rockets have finished their season. It was a good one... Ben played well, and the coach recommended that he try out for the Advanced team in the spring. He's also going to play on an indoor team in January. Lots more soccer to come!
- Ben's 8th Birthday: Home Celebration
Our little Obi Wan Kenobi is 8 years old.
- Temples and Tombs: Ben's Egypt Program
The 2nd Grade put on a wonderful show about Egypt... Ben was a "rapper"... I don't know if we can call his performance a "rap," but we thought he did really well anyway!!!
- Our Trip to Washington, Iowa
It's been 16 years since I've visited my dad's birthplace and hometown. We had a great time visiting my Uncle Digger, my grandmother ("Oma"), and my cousin Jason and his wife Mary. Everyone was wonderful to us and this visit was a treasure.
- Our Visit to Rock Island, Illinois
My Omi Ruth is staying in a facility in Rock Island near her sons Clark, Mark, and Grant. We drove out to visit her and were met by Grant, Clark, and Clark's 9 year old son Landon. Omi had a good day... she smiled a lot, opened her eyes, and sang "Stille Nacht."
- Our Friend Liam's 5th Birthday
As usual, Tracey comes up with great party ideas. This year they had a treasure hunt/pirate theme and the party was held at the Botanical Gardens in Norfolk. They have a neat "World of Wonders" where the kids can explore plants, animals, and historical themes. A good time was had by all.
- "Camping" at North Landing Beach
We've made it a tradition to go camping at North Landing Beach Campsite in Pungo every fall, but we kind of "wimped out" and decided not to spend the night... it was way too cold... BUT we made the best of a beautiful fall evening by inviting neighbors and friends for a campfire. The kids had fun exploring the beach, the "boys" got a little kayaking in, and we enjoyed roasting hot dogs, hamburgers and s'mores by the fire... AND we got to drive back home and get in our toasty beds. Yahoo!
- School Halloween Parties
It was party time for the Thompson kids. Both Ashley and Ben had fun in their classrooms with their activities, and Sarah stopped by Miss Iris' house (her day care provider) to party with her friends.
- Trick or Treat 2007
It's another year, and another round of fun for the kids on our cul-de-sac.
- Sarah's Halloween Parade at Courthouse Academy
Sarah had fun dressing up as a snowy owl for her Halloween parade at preschool...
- Our 2007 Pumpkin Carving Fest
Another year, another pumpkin carving extravaganza. Greg set up the carving station in our garage and the kids came by to help scoop out the pumpkin brains and supervise the creativity... we were each told to draw our pumpkin face out on paper and our creation was transferred exactly as drawn...
- Other October Happenings...
Ashley loses one of her two front teeth!!; Greg gets a new 'do when Brooke leaves one of her hairclips over at our house; Jackie cuts her thumbtip while cutting onions and Heidi glues it back together and gives her a "green thumb"; Greg heckles our devout Red Sox fans next door during the World Series...
- Happy Birthday Greg!
So, the old man is 36 years old!! We celebrated a day early ('cause Mom has to work late on the big nite) by baking a cake and digging in!
- Annual Pumpkin Patch Visit: Hill Ridge Farms, Youngsville, NC
Grandma Thompson knew of a nice farm about 45 min north of Raleigh where she had taken some of her classes for field trips. We had a great day with all sorts of activities, and beautiful weather!
- The Duke University Campus
OK, I couldn't help it. We were leaving the football game at halftime and I wanted ONE picture of the Duke Chapel. One picture turned into many as I was so impressed by the beauty of this University's campus. It's even more beautiful than Tech... and that is a very difficult admission!
- The Hokies Crush Duke: Ben's First Football Game
What a perfect day for Ben to see his first college football game! We took Ben to the campus of Duke in Durham, NC to see the Virginia Tech Hokies take on the Blue Devils. You wouldn't believe it... there were so many Hokies there you couldn't be sure you were actually at the opposing team's campus. It was so much fun (especially since we won, 43-14).
- Beautiful New Bern, NC
Heidi's cousin Thomas and his family invited us down to their hometown New Bern, NC. It's a quaint waterside town with a lot of historical charm, and we had amazing weather to enjoy it!
- Busch Gardens Again...
Well, when you have a season pass...
Didn't take too many pictures this time. We were having too much fun taking Zac Fuller on the rides and watching him have the best time... we even took him on the Griffon with some trepidation... but he had a blast!! No seizures!
- Key's Cookout
Dr. Kim Key works with Heidi at Bay Beach Veterinary Clinic. She and her husband Michael had a cookout for friends and co-workers. The kids enjoyed playing around with their two pugs, Dudley and Hogan.
- Neptune Festival 2007
We had stunning weather for the Neptune Festival this year! We headed down on Friday evening to scope out the sandcastles and practice a little bit of v-ball. On Saturday, Greg played in the men's tournament with Scott and won the AA division (way to go, guys... sorry no pics!).
On Sunday Greg and Heidi played co-ed... and made it to the play offs but lost in the first round. The Frenches stopped by to offer some support... so did Jackie and Sandy.
- Frenches Cookout
Martin, Tracey, Liam and India invited us over for a "last hurrah" in their pool... Greg never made it since he was playing down at the v-ball tournament. As usual, Tracey had a delicious spread and we had a great time.
- September Happenings
More happenings around the cul-de-sac... the kids hang out and wait for an ice cream man that never showed up, Ashley rides a 2 wheeler, then freaks out and gives up, and baby Zane is mastering the walking thing!
- Another Round of Busch Gardens...
Since we had season passes this year we headed back to Williamsburg for some more fun at Busch Gardens. This time neighbors Patrick, Jackie and kids came along which made for a big crew... the kids all had a great time together! We couldn't quite make it past 6 pm when all of the Hallo-Scream stuff went into full swing (we were tuckered out)... but maybe we'll make it back before the end of the season...
- Another Season of Soccer...
Ben is on a Virginia Rush U-8 team called the ROCKETS this fall.
- Luberts in Virginia Beach
Heidi's cousin Thomas and his family stopped in Virginia Beach on their way home to New Bern, NC from Philadelphia. The visit was very short but we loved seeing them!
- Grammy's Memorial Service
We attended a beautiful memorial service for Grammy at Glen Air in Cary, NC. We were joined by the Blues and the Hulons from Laurinburg, Mom and Dad's long time friends.
- Fun at Silver Lake Waterpark, Raleigh, NC
We went back to Silver Lake this year with Grandma and Grandpa Thompson. The kids had fun... so did the adults!
- A Stop in Manteo, NC
We stopped in Manteo, NC on our way to Raleigh. It's one of Heidi's favorite places... and she FORGOT her camera battery! Ugh! So Greg snapped a few shots with his camera phone. Not the best, but they offer some glimpses of this quaint place. We stayed at the Tranquil Inn, and enjoyed Oktoberfest at the Weeping Radish Restaurant.
- Sarah's First Day of School
Sarah had a great first day of preschool in the 3 year old class at Courthouse Academy.
- Back on the Bus Again!
Summer's over! It's time again for the kids on Kern Court to head back to school...
- Zane Freeman's First Birthday
The little bald man next door is one year old! We all shared ice cream cake to celebrate...
- An Afternoon at Sandbridge Beach
A group of us neighbors headed down to Sandbridge for an afternoon swim. Zac Fuller had the biggest kick out of the waves and was a joy to watch.
- The World Through Ashley's Eyes, Part Two
Ashley and her friends Brooke and Sam had lots of fun with the camera the past couple of days.
- Images from the ECSC, Day Two
Greg's a glutton for punishment. After playing in the men's tournament on Saturday, he suggested that we play co-ed on Sunday. It was my first volleyball tournament and I was nervous! Despite the horrendous heat and Greg's exhaustion from the day before, we hung in with the teams and stayed competitive! A thunderstorm rolled in and we were kicked off the beach while still in pool play. What could have been?...
A zillion thanks to all those who supported us and helped watch our kids! Jackie, Patrick, and family, Dad, and Scott and Kendra... all entertained our kids down at the beach for the day.
- Images from the ECSC, Day One
Every year Virginia Beach hosts the East Coast Surfing Championships, and of course every year Greg's in the volleyball tournament. He and Scott did well this year... they made it to the AA final, but lost it despite a good effort. It was so brutally hot this weekend... high 90's and humid. I brought the kids down with neighbors Parker and Brooke, and they had a good time at the beach. We ate at Planet Pizza afterwards, and it took forever before the pizza came. We were bored and grumpy and made mean faces at the camera to help pass the time.
- Wacky Wednesday Part Two: Tanner Drew's 5th Birthday Party
OK, so after a crazy day of playing around like mad people... we moved on to a WACKY birthday party....
Creative Kendra does it again. How does she do it? Lil' Tanner turned five today, and Mom and Dad put on another great party. The kids started off by dressing up as wacky as they could, making tie-dye shirts, eating breakfast for dinner, hitting a pinata that turned out empty (SURPRISE!), going on an easter egg hunt, being served a cake made out of MEATLOAF (eeek), being served ice cream cones that were actually CAKE (very cute), and blowing bubbles that didn't pop easily. VERY WACKY!!! Happy Birthday Tanner!!
- Wacky Wednesday Part One: Cul-de-Sac Kids Gone Wild
It all started with Parker spending the night (this time he didn't ask to go home... so maybe there isn't something wrong with us after all). The boys got up at 6:15 am sharp, and started in with the light saber duels. After an express breakfast, we moved on to watching "The Empire Strikes Back." Then the girls rolled in.... Brooke, Sam and Jessie. They put on an interesting fashion show. We'll have to pull out these photos when they are in high school (which won't be long, sniff!!)
We were blessed with cameos by Zac Fuller and Zane Freeman, while Zac Freeman and Max hung out in the garage to play some pool.
These summer days are drawing to a close... school's around the corner.
- Sam Loves Tonks
Poor Sam Fuller... she just loves Tonks the kitten, but there are two problems: 1) Tonks is too little to be adopted, and 2) Mom says no. So Sam came over and sulked and snuggled with Tonks and pondered "what could have been"... of course Heidi gets obnoxious and takes photo after photo of the moment.
- Ashley, Sarah, Brooke, and "Tonks"
Another dumped critter at the veterinary clinic. Wouldn't be the first time... sadly. But it's my turn since I have the fewest cats at home, so I brought this little 4 week old kitten home to foster for a while, much to all the kids glee. Neighbor Brooke Richard came over to play with Ashley, and the girls had fun posing for the camera, then cuddling with lil' Tonks.
- Another trip to Purcellville...
The summer's disappearing and we drove up to Heidi's parents again to visit with family, swim, play volleyball and crouquet, and make s'mores by the firepit. This collection of pictures is kind of goofy. I've been having so much fun with the camera. I think I'm truly starting to get on people's nerves.
- Ashley's Picnic with Friends
Miss Sandy and Miss Daisy took Ashley with them on a picnic to Princess Anne Park. The girls had fun clowning around for Miss Sandy's camera.
- Aunt Dot and Uncle Lonnie in Virginia Beach
Greg's Aunt Dot and Uncle Lonnie Thompson drove up from Florence, South Carolina to Virginia Beach for a weekend visit. Uncle Lonnie is Grandpa Ken's younger brother. This was the first time they visited our house. We had a cookout and enjoyed a reprieve from the nasty heat wave we had earlier this week.
- Ben Goes Kayaking and Blueberry Pickin' with Grandpa
Grandpa Thompson picked Ben up around 6:30 am on Sunday morning and they drove up to Matthews County, Virginia for a kayaking trip. They enjoyed kayaking on the East River and stopped to pick blueberries. Ben found some snails and decided to name them and give them birthdays. They had a great time!
- Heidi and Sandy at First Landing State Park
Heidi and neighbor Sandy Fuller went for a walk at First Landing State Park, north of the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. We went early to avoid the horrific heat and humidity... and we had a great time!
- The World Through Ashley's Eyes
We gave Ashley a camera to play around with. Everyone's been scrapbooking around here and she wanted to be part of it. We told her to take her own pics. Interesting shots she's come up with...
- Busch Gardens with Grandpa Thompson
We braved through a hot summer day at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg... with Grandpa Thompson in tow (Sarah stayed behind with Nanny Cheryl). The lines for the water rides were long, and we spent a lot of money on drinks, but all in all we had a good time.
For kicks I threw in a couple of pictures of a Busch Gardens trip in 1993 so we can all see how much we have aged. YIKES!!!!
- Ben's Catches of the Day
Daddy and Ben went fishing down at Rudee's Inlet... Dad had a camera in his phone to take some pictures of their fish. Not great quality pics, but they show the excitement!
- More fun in the pool and volleyball court....
Omi Jeanne enjoyed swimming with the girls, and we enjoyed more volleyball. Hats off to Daddy and Britt for creating a professional grade volleyball court that any pro player would envy...
- Losing our Heads at Cranium
It seemed inncocent enough... bringing a bunch of family members together late at night for a happy game of "Cranium"... we somehow survived the game with team James, Leslie and Jason as the runaway victors in this tension filled match with so much pride at stake.
- It's All About Sarah...
With three cameras rolling (Heidi's, Britt's and Mary's) we got a ridiculous number of pictures of Sarah during our second visit to Purcellville this summer. Everyone just seemed to think the 3 year old with floaties on her arms was very camera-worthy.
- A Heilman Cousins Reunion: Portraits
Can't remember a time when this has happened... all of the grandchildren and great grandchildren of Logan and Wilma Heilman, all together in the same spot, at the same time. Heidi's cousin Jason (who she has not seen in 16 years) and his wife Mary visited Purcellville from Iowa this summer and we were all able to spend a couple of days visiting and playing lots of "catch up."
Hope Oma Heilman enjoys these photos of all of us.
- We Love and Miss You, Gwen
It's hard to believe that she has been with us since the very beginning. I remember in the summer of 1991 when Greg was writing letters to me from summer school about this little calico kitten he was going to share with his roomate down at Virginia Tech. She was feisty and growly, and she didn't like me much at all til the end. She LOVED her daddy. She's been all over... Reidsville, North Carolina, Blacksburg, Richmond and Virginia Beach. She saw all our babies come into this world and invade her space. She loved tuna and turkey. She loved chasing milktops. She was a good kitty and a member of our family. Love you, Gwen.
Gwen, June 1991-July 2007
- Goin' Fishin' with Riley on her Third Birthday
The Drews put on a wonderful birthday party for their daughter Riley. The kids painted their own tackle boxes, made their own fishing poles, and fished right there off the edge of their backyard.
- More Country Volleyball and Our Bonfire
More pictures of volleyball action... we are obviously obsessed. Britt and Mathew also created a nice fire for the kids to make smores in. Greg started a round of silly ghost stories. Sofia found it all very disturbing.
- Volleyball in the Country
Greg's dream come true... volleyball wherever we go. Heidi's family worked hard to set up a regulation volleyball court on their property for everyone's enjoyment! And we did enjoy it... despite the mouthful of gnats, the cut feet, and the arguments (we have some SERIOUS competitors in the family).
- Pool Fun in Purcellville
We drove up to Heidi's parents for the 4th of July.... and got to spend time with all sorts of family... Heidi's great aunt Elisabeth, cousins Pia, Sonya, Sofia and Julia.. Heidi's aunt and uncle James and Leslie and cousins David and Jeremy. Lots of family!
- Simon Says, Gary's Fireworks Display and More, Purcellville, VA
Our Fourth of July was filled with visitors... Britt's long time friend Becky visited with her husband John and their three girls... Audrey, Abby and brand new baby Analeesa. Mathew's girlfriend Melissa was down from Pennsylvania. Sonya played Simon Says with the kids. And we were spared the rain and headed over to an estate in Hamilton for Gary's annual fireworks display.
- The Girls Play Volleyball
Greg took pictures of Heidi and Kendra playing volleyball on the beach. He's not good at getting the true action shots. Heidi looks dorky wearing Greg's sand socks, but it was better than getting blisters.
- Our Pirate Voyage
Grandma and Grandpa Thompson treated us all to a trip on the "Pieces of Eight" pirate ship that sails along the coast of Virginia Beach. The kids had a great time. Mama needed dramamine.
- Harry Potter Extravaganza
The geeky Thompson family takes their kids and Liam French to Princess Anne Public Library for the Harry Potter Extravaganza. Liam has never read or seen Harry Potter... and seemed a little confused about what the fuss was all about.
- Welcome, Baby India!
Martin, Tracey, and their son Liam welcome their baby daughter, India French, born on June 24, 2007.
- Ashley's Party
As is the norm these days, Heidi (in her frenzied, last minute fashion) quickly threw together a celebration of Ashley's birthday while her cousin Sofia was here. Inspired by Scott and Kendra's ice cream social, we found that just good old fashioned games like three legged races, eggs on a spoon, and water balloon toss (and fights) are enough to keep a group of neighboorhood kids (and adults) amused.
- The Farmers Market, Bubba's, and Dress Up
We continue our summer traditions of visiting the Virginia Beach Farmers Market and going to Bubba's Deli for BBQ. We also enjoyed Yoder's Dairy's homemade ice cream.
The cousins had a great time playing dress up for most of the visit. Poor Ben just doesn't seem to get into the whole fashion show thing.
- Beach Fun with the Powers, Day Two
Sick of beach pictures? Too bad. More good weather, so more beach action for all of us.
- Evening Cookout and Soccer with the Powers
We had a cookout with fajitas, homemade salsa and guacamole, and margaritas(not the kids, of course). Then we had a friendly (?) game of soccer in our backyard.
- Beach Fun with the Powers, Day One
We all headed down to the beach to enjoy the great weather and watch Greg and Scott play in a V2 volleyball tournament.
- Evening at the Beach with the Powers
Both Heidi and Sonya had terrible sinus infections but we all headed down to the Oceanfront to breathe in the salty breezes. The weather was perfect and the kids had a blast...
- Happy Fathers Day, Dad!
We took Dad to Jungle Golf down at the Oceanfront for Fathers Day... the kids wanted to give him something fun they could do with him.
- More Beach Fun with Greg's Family
We all met down at the beach this weekend.... Greg was playing in a tournament (as usual... although without Scott this time)... we met Grandma and Grandpa Thompson and Greg's cousin Andy and his family. Baby Ben loved the sand and water.
- June Happenings
School's ended... and Heidi rushed in to get pictures to be nostalgic for years later. Also, Greg's cousin Andy and his wife Jill and their son baby Benjamin are here in Virginia Beach visiting.
More pictures of baby Zane... when you have a face that cute it's hard to stop the camera.
- Scott and Kendra's Annual Ice Cream Social
Friends Scott and Kendra put on their 4th Annual Ice Cream Social... with all of the traditional games... water balloon toss, egg toss, hula hoop competition, bubble blowing contest, and of course, ...the canoe races. Not to mention tons of ice cream.
- Jacob Springer's 6th Birthday
Our friend's son turned 6 this weekend, and had a few buddies over for some slip and slide fun.
- NLES Fun Day
A few pictures taken of the kids on their "Fun Day" at North Landing Elementary.
- Fun at the Melting Pot
Heidi and Allison took Tracey out to dinner to the Melting Pot, a fondue restaurant.... Tracey's due date is in 4 weeks!!
- Baby Zane
Some pictures of Zane Freeman
- Memorial Day at Sandbridge Beach
We met the Springers down at Sandbridge for an early morning at the beach and a picnic lunch. The weather was perfect... 90 degrees and no humidity, but the water was FREEZING!!
- Memorial Day Volleyball Party
On Sunday we had our third annual volleyball get together in the backyard. Things started off as usual... the guys playing twos while the ladies hung out trying to corral the kids and watching all of the "excitement", but of course since Mike Wright was there, it got interesting. He invented this "Lob any kind of ball over the net to see if you can hit the people laying in the grass on the other side" game. Very amusing! Later on we all played co-ed 6's. Even Heidi survived a few embarrassing plays ( we won't go into details).
- Memorial Day Cookout
On Saturday the neighbors in our cul-de-sac and beyond brought out their grills and side dishes to enjoy Memorial Day!! The kids enjoyed crouquet, kickball, and of course, swimming.
Our friends Sam and Diane Springer dropped by with their boys to hang out for a while.
- New Camera!
For our 12th anniversary, Greg got me a new camera and I practiced with it today...takes great pictures!
- Outer Banks with the Luberts
We drove up in the afternoon to meet Heidi's cousin Thomas and his wife Susanne, and their two children Sven and Gisene in Nags Head.
We enjoyed "frolicking" through the Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo, and afterwards we ate dinner at The Outer Banks Brewing Station in Nags Head (we ate there last year and enjoyed it so much we went back). Sven speaks English just like a little American boy now! It was fun to see how the children just instantly click and have a great time playing together.
- Philadelphia Visit, Pia's Quinceanera, May 2007
We drove up to Philadelphia for a visit with the family and to celebrate Heidi's cousin Pia's 15th birthday. We stayed at cousin Sonya's house, and as usual, the kids had a great time together. On Saturday morning we met with Elisabeth at her favorite place... Fairmount Park. She loves the beautiful landscaping and the statues of her favorite German writers, Goethe and Schiller. The kids loved climbing the trees!
Later that afternoon we went to the Franklin Institute, and saw amazing artifacts from King Tut's tomb. Even the kids were impressed to see beautiful things so perfectly preserved and over 3,000 years old! Too bad photos weren't allowed.
On Sunday we attended Pia's "Quinceanera", a coming of age celebration that began during mass at the Catholic church (where Pia looked beautiful in her white gown and sang amazingly with the congregation) and followed with a big party with lots of good food, live Latin music, and dancing.
- Norfolk Botanical Garden April 2007
Already it seems like an annual tradition... to visit the Botanical Garden every April when the azaleas are in bloom. This year it was an extra special time because we had some special neighbors join us for a beautiful Sunday excursion... Kelly Lewis with her kids Kayla and Kendall, and Jessie Freeman. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
- Summer Haircuts
It was a huge decision to get the girls haircuts... they have had long hair for so long. But they feel great and are proud of themselves... and Ashley had hair just long enough to donate to locks of love. It looks really short but it'll grow fast, And for now, they feel lighter than air!!
- NLES's Roc & Roll Fun Run
The kids' elementary school's PTA sponsored a fitness run (1 mile) for the kids and parents. Our whole family participated. Ben amazed us all by running a mile in 12 minutes... he came in 5th place! WOW!! He was proud and earned a bead for his "brag tag" at school. Ashley made it too, with a little help and encouragement from the school principal, Mrs. Risney, who ran/walked with her most of the way. Sarah made it by sitting on Mom's shoulders.
- Zachary Fuller's 13th Birthday Party
Happy Birthday Zach! Samantha Freeman and Sam Fuller organized a wonderful party for our favorite clown lover.
- Summer's Started... and it's only April!
We headed down to the beach in beautiful weather to watch Greg play with Martin in the first volleyball tournament of the season. Although they lost, it was great to soak in the sunshine after a dismal start to this month weather-wise.
- Condo Renovations Phase I

- Easter 2007 Extravaganza
Lots of Easter celebrations this year!
We start with Ashley's Class Party and Easter Egg Hunt. Ashley's Kindergarten teachers are Mrs. Edwards and Mrs. Williamson.
Saturday, April 7, 2007: the older kids in the cul-de-sac planned an Easter Egg Hunt... but... it SNOWED here in Virginia Beach! (Our first and probably only snow of the year).
Easter morning Dad and Mom felt a little under the weather, but the kids enjoyed their Easter baskets and bunny trails. The kids shared an egg hunt with our friends the Frenches, then we enjoyed brunch over at the Signature Grill.
Later in the afternoon the Kern Court Samanthas (Freeman and Fuller) orchestrated another big egg hunt with hot chocolate and a raffle with lots of prizes.
- Sarah's Spring Concert at Courthouse Academy
Tuesday, April 3, 2007: Sarah's preschool class sings for us.
- March Happenings
Ashley lost her first tooth on March 21, 2007! How exciting!
On Sunday, March 25th the kids in our cul-de-sac got together to sell some cookies for charity. They almost made twenty dollars!
March 31... catch a glimpse of Ben's attempt to cut his own hair! YIKES!!!! He also had his first spring soccer game with the RUSH U-8 FIREBALLS. He scored a goal... way to go, Ben! The girls entertained themselves in the adjacent field with some new friends.
- Ben's Sleepover
Earlier this year Ashley had a sleepover, and so this past weekend Ben one of his friends spend the night too. Bryce Walsh has been Ben's friend since they were both 2 years old and met in preschool.
- Sarah's Third Birthday Party
Sarah and her friend Danny Alderman are only 2 day apart in age. Their mommies had the brilliant idea to have a birthday party for the both of them at the Bounce House in Virginia Beach! Danny invited a few of his friends, and Sarah invited hers, and altogether it added up to about 15 kids! They spent about an hour bouncing away on all of the inflatable equipment, followed by snacks and cake, then a fun game of limbo! These kids partied hard and seemed to have a great time. We chose the theme of frogs having a "hopping good time" but frog party favors are hard to come by! Luckily our local grocer's bakery said they would try to come up with "something" cute for the cake... and we were all impressed!
- North Landing Elementary Annual Carnival
Every year the kids' elementary school has a carnival as a fundraiser. The kids play games, jump on inflatable bouncers, get their faces painted, and enjoy all the sights and feel of a carnival. This year Mom volunteered as a face painter. Grandma Thompson came along and saw their school for the first time.
- Sarah's Birthday Celebrations
It seemed like we kept on celebrating Sarah's birthday for days! First, Sarah had a celebration at school with her preschool classmates.
THEN, she celebrated with her nanny Cheryl and Mr. Gene at Red Robin restaurant and at their house!
THEN, Grandma and Grandpa Thompson came to visit and showered her with wonderful gifts...
THEN she had a birthday party... see the next album!
- Our Trip to Islands of Adventure, Orlando, Florida February 2007
Our fourth and final day in Orlando we went to Islands of Adventure, right next to Universal Studios. The weather was STILL cold... but we had a lot of fun. What was so special was that Sarah could go on lots of rides and get in on the fun too. Poor Sarah had an accident in her pants and we had to buy her something to wear... what do you know? They had this Godawful lime green Shrek outfit on the clearance rack, just her size. What a sight, horns and all.
I threw in at the end of the slideshow, a few shots of our trip home including a short stop to the quirky "South of the Border" at the border of North and South Carolina. Britt said we better take pictures before they tear the whole thing down.
- Our Trip to Universal Studios
Another cold day in Florida! At least the sun was out.... we had a fun day at Universal Studios... watching Shrek in 3D, going on a boatride and meeting JAWS, and seeing all sorts of attractions. Later that evening it was Mardi Gras, and Ashley loved seeing all the tall people in their costumes! (The other kids stayed a safe distance!)_
- Our Trip To Disney World-MGM Park
After our morning at Animal Kingdom, we hopped on over to MGM. We enjoyed things like: the Tower of Terror, presentations of the Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, and the 3D Muppet Show.
After the park, Dad and the kids got to relax and soothe their sore muscles in the hot tub back at the hotel.
- Our Trip to Disney World- Animal Kingdom
The next day, in the morning, we arrived at Animal Kingdom. The park was beautiful and had to be Heidi's and Aunt Britt's favorite Disney Park. We saw lots of animals and enjoyed a great setting. It was still cold though!!!
- Our Trip to Disney World- Magic Kingdom
After a long drive from Virginia Beach, Virginia to Orlando, Florida (about 825 miles), we made our very first trip to Disneyworld!
Our first day was dedicated to visiting the Magic Kingdom. The kids were excited about all the Disney characters we saw and the fun rides and attractions we experienced. The weather was cold but we braved it! After the park closed at 7pm, we stayed on for the PIRATE AND PRINCESS PARTY... the kids dressed up in their costumes and ran around collecting treasure (chocolate and bead necklaces), and we watched a spectacular fireworks display. Wow, were the kids exhausted after their day of fun and excitement (so were Mom, Dad, and Aunt Britt!)
- Playdate and Ben's Testing for His Green Belt
Today was career day at school. Ashley dressed up as an artist... what she wants to be when she grows up (a little more realistic aspiration than a princess). Ben didn't dress up as anything becasue he wants to be train driver and we didn't have the appropriate apparel for him (hmf!!)
After school Ashley's friend Caroline Anthony came over (a chef wannabe).
Later that evening Ben tested for his green belt in Tae Kwon Do. He did so well, standing up there with the bigger people! He was the only one in that group to break his wood board on the first try. He was soooo proud of himself and so were we.
- Visit to Raleigh, NC January 2007
Daddy had to go on business to South Carolina for 2 weeks. We drove down to Raleigh to meet him for the weekend at Grandma and Grandpa Thompson's house.
Grandpa took us to the Children's Museum of Life and Science in Durham and the kids had a great time.
On Sunday the kids enjoyed playing outdoors at a park called Laurel Hills in Raleigh.
- Our Trip to the Great Wolf Lodge, Williamsburg, VA
Thanks, Grandma and Grandpa Thompson, for a great Christmas gift! We stayed overnight at the Great Wolf Lodge, an indoor waterpark and hotel.
The kids were in heaven. The first night we enjoyed waterslides and the wavepool (even in the dark), then played all sorts of games in the arcade, and then enjoyed ice cream and treats. There was a magic show in the lobby that evening.
In the morning, we got up early and enjoyed a huge breakfast at IHOP. Then back to the waterpark for several hours of fun. We finished the day off by eating at one of our all time favorite places, Pierce's Pit Barbecue.
- Ashley's First Sleep Over
Ashley invited her friend Emily over to spend the night. The night was filled with dancing, popcorn, a viewing of "The Ant Bully", and fort building.
- New Years Eve in Purcellville, VA

- Preparations for Christmas 2006
Included in this album are: pictures of us decorating our tree, our Christmas card family photos, and the kids school festivities
- Visit with Family in Raleigh, NC December 2006
We headed down to Raleigh over the weekend to visit family. Greg's cousin Andy and his family flew out from Denver, Colorado. It was the first time (for many of us) meeting Benjamin, their 8 month old baby.
- Aunt Britt's Portraits of the Kids
When we visited Purcellville, Britt took some great pictures with her superior camera!
- November trip to Purcellville
On our way home from Philadelphia we stopped in Purcellville and visited with the family! Great Omi Ruth and Aunt Gayle were there too. Benjamin and Great Omi celebrated their birthdays together!
- Thanksgiving in Philadelphia
We drove up to Philadelphia to visit Heidi's great aunt Elisabeth in her new condo. She made us a magnificent meal! We also visited Sonya, Chris, Sofia, and Julia... Greg and Chris took the kids to the zoo while Heidi and Sonya made soap! The following day we met again at Clark Park.
- End of the Season Soccer Party
Ben finished up his fall soccer season with a good game (he scored his team's only goal). After the game we headed down to "757", a pizza place owned by the soccer coach. The kids had pizza and cake and played video games in the arcade.
- Ben's 7th Birthday Celebration
It's hard to believe our little boy is 7 years old. Mom went to go eat lunch with him at school and took cookies for the class...
After work, Mom, Nanny Cheryl, Ashley and Sarah shared birthday cake. Poor Daddy missed out on the fun because he was in Colorado. Soon Ben plans on having a bowling party after Thanksgiving.
- Camping at North Landing Beach, Va Beach, VA
There's a great campground called North Landing Beach about 20 minutes from our house, and we decided (fairly last minute) to grab a tent and some food and spend a night down there. We got the same spot as last year... right on the water. No mosquitoes this time... and the kids made it through the night. Again we were able to witness a beautiful sunset which we took millions of pictures of...
- Our friend Liam's 4th birthday
Liam French turned four and invited us all to his birthday extravaganza. After making their own pizzas, the kids were treated to an old-fashioned style magic show, including a real white rabbit (named "Prince Charming") pulled out of a hat. The kids laughed so hard we thought they's burst.
- Greg's Birthday
It's Greg's 35th birthday!!! Everyone dives into Greg's favorite cake... yellow with chocoltae frosting.
- Pumpkin Patch
Every year our family visits the pumpkin patch. This year Grandma and Grandpa Thompson joined us for a trip to Hunt Club Farm In Virginia Beach. The kids went on rides like the Fun Slide, Ferris Wheel, and Spinning Monkeys. They also had their faces painted. It was a great day!
- Trick or Treat 2006
Every year the "Kern Court Crew" gets together for trick or treating. Instead of making kids walk to our door, parents bring out their lawn chairs and set them up out in the cul de sac and enjoy the sights.
We had great weather this year. Ben was a ninja, Asley a glamourous witch (with red sparkly highlights in her hair), and Sarah a unicorn who didn't enjoy having her hood on.
Our friend Buzz Lightyear, aka Liam French, also visited us and participated in the annual game of tag in the cul de sac after trick or treating.
- Halloween School Events
Ashley's Kindergarten class had a Halloween Party. They "picked" pumpkins from the front lawn, sang songs for the parents and decorated their pumpkins.
Sarah's preschool class had a Halloween parade and sang songs for us!
- Busch Gardens Williamsburg October 2006
The last weekend in October Grandpa Thompson treated us to a day at Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. Grandma stayed behind in Virginia Beach with Sarah and they had a day at the Virginia Marine Science Museum.
We had a great day with lots of beautiful weather... the kids went on lots of rides, and Greg even participated in a show starring as Papa Bear of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
- Making Strides For Breast Cancer Walk Norfolk, VA
A group of girls from Heidi's work formed a team called "Paws for a Cure" and participated in an event called "Making Strides for Breast Cancer" at Harbor Park in Norfolk, Virginia. We felt this was a great cause because all of us know someone affected by this disease. Dr. Kim Key's mom (dressed in pink), who lives in Richmond, VA came down to walk with us and is a breast cancer survivor. The weather was HORRIBLE in the morning but cleared up just in time for our walk. We had a great time and decided to try to make this an annual event for our team. We raised about $1000 this time around.
- Fall Festival and Pumpkin Carving
Ben's friend Bryce Walsh invited our family to their village's Fall Festival. They bounced in the inflatables, decorated Halloween cookies, and played with school friends.
After the fun we walked home and the kids carved pupkins with Daddy. Greg asks the kids to draw their pumpkins faces out on paper and he transfers the drawing onto the pumpkin and carves it. Sarah had a little trouble with this, so she needed lots of help. Maybe next year she can do it on her own!
- Neptune Festival 2006
Every year Virginia Beach puts on the Neptune Festival down at the Oceanfront with art, sandcastles, volleyball and more.
We headed down early before the masses and looked at the cool sandcastles. Ben always enjoys chasing the seagulls.
- Jumping Rope on Kern Court
We're so lucky to live on a cul de sac. Neighbors Darnell with daughters Kayla and baby Kendall brought out their jump rope and everyone gave it a try! (Some of us had less success than others.)
- Maymont Park, Richmond Virginia September 2006
Back in the ol' days of 1993 or so, Greg used to work at this park in Richmond along the James River. It used to be an old estate converted to an animal friendly park equipped with beautiful grounds including Italian and Japanese gardens, a petting zoo, a museum/educational center, and an aviary. We took the kids last year and they had a blast... so we decided to visit again.
- September Soccer Game
Ben payed fall soccer this year with Rush Soccer Club. The kids named themselves the Pirates. It's been a bit of a rough year, but the kids are having fun.
- Virginia Zoo, Norfolk Virginia September 2006
We decided to head down to the Virginia Zoo in Norfolk one weekend. The kids had fun as usual. Favorites were... prarie dogs, spider monkeys, giraffes, and all of the reptiles.
- Fun in a Hot Tub with Aunt Britt, Purcellville VA
The kids had some fun with their Aunt Britt in the spa at Omi and Opa's house... she put them in a plastic tub and let them bob around... they looked like a reenactment of rub a dub dub... except all three couldn't fit in at once.
- Annual Trip to Nags Head with the Springers, Nags Head, NC
We spent a couple of days with Heidi's vet school classmate Sam Springer and his family. Their son Jacob had broken his leg earlier in the summer and had to deal with a body cast but he still seemed like he was having fun! We were lucky to have some snipets of good weather to enjoy the beach... earlier in the week it rained so hard that the roads washed out.
- Great Grandma's 86th Birthday Visit, Raleigh, NC August 2006
Happy 86th Birthday Great Grammy Katherine!
The kids visited the park in the morning and later we got together and enjoyed lemon cake. Ashley was especially helpful in blowing out the candles.
- Fun at Silver Lake, Raleigh, NC August 2006
Grandma and Grandpa Thompson took us to a place called Silver Lake...a waterpark in Raleigh. The kids had a blast!!
- A Trip to Manteo with the Luberts, Manteo, NC August 2006
Heidi's cousin Thomas Lubert moved from Berlin, Germany to New Bern, North Carolina with his wife Susanne and son Sven last year. They had a baby girl Gisene earlier this summer (as Thomas likes to say, "made in Germany, born in the USA"). Heidi and Thomas had not seen each other since 1988 when Heidi last visited Germany! It was great to see everyone. We had beautiful weather to explore Roanoke Island and go to Festival Park, where there is a museum focusing on the life of the Lost Colony. The kids favorite part was the Elizabeth II, a life size replica of the ship that brought the colonists over from England to the Outer Banks. The kids also loved seeing The North Carolina Aquarium.
It was amazing to watch the interaction between our kids and Sven. Even though there was a language barrier (Sven spoke only German), the kids played and laughed like there was no issue. That was great to see!
- A Family Get-Together in Purcellville, VA August 2006
We met Heidi's cousin Sonya and her family at Omi and Opa's hose in Pucellville. We also got to spend time with Uncle James, Aunt Leslie, and cousins David and Jeremy. Everyone loved hanging out at the pool and jumping on the trampoline!! The kids also enjoyed a special day with Aunt Britt, who took them to Luray Caverns! Lots of summer fun on this visit.
- The Philadelphia Powers in Virginia Beach
On their way to the Outer Banks in North Carolina, Heidi's cousin Sonya and her family stopped for a visit in Virginia Beach. The kids always love getting together!
- Ben at Tae Kwon Do Practice
Ben took up Tae Kwon Do this year. His teacher is Master Paul Rendon, one of Greg's long time beach volleyball buddies.
- A Trip to the Beach on the 4th of July, Va Beach
We are lucky to live close to the water, especially in the summertime. In 10 minutes we are down at the oceanfront... after hanging out by the water we went over to Grandma and Grandpa's condo to watch the fireworks. Unfortunately, it wasn't a good view (there was a very tall hotel in the way). But we had fun anyway!
- Ashley's 5th Birthday Celebration at Pungo Pizza, Va Beach
The kids just love Pungo Pizza. It's this family oriented pizza place with an arcade (just like in the 80's) and the kids eat pizza, and run around like banshees afterwards and waste quarters in a matter of minutes. And they act silly. Really, really silly.
- Ashley and Opa Celebrate their Birthdays in Purcellville, June 2006
We enjoyed a visit and celebrated Ashley and Opa's birthdays... both born on June 28th! Uncle James, Auntl Leslie and cousins David and Jeremy joined our celebration.
- Ocean Breeze Funpark, Va Beach June 2006
Dad and Ben are missing in these photos because they were off on the other side of the park, sliding down the BIG slides. The girls camped out in the kids cove. Thanks to Grandma and Grandpa for treating us to season passes this year. The kids love the place.
- Grandma and Grandpa's New Condo in Virginia Beach
Grandma and Grandpa Thompson bought a condominium by Rudee Inlet here in Virginia Beach this summer!! We'd go down and visit on the weekends and see the progress... beautiful!!
- Ashley's Ballerina Days
In June we saw Ashley's first ballet presentation (she had taken dance class at her preschool all year long). Poor shy Ashley shed quite a few tears during the performance. The preschool's director had to stand up on stage with her to try to console her... but she stuck with the program and danced through her misery. She looked beautiful in her lilac dress.
Later in the month she wanted more torture, so she went to dance camp after school was over. This time she was seasoned, and less anxious... and shed only a tear or two and pulled it together again.
- Visit with Aunt Elisabeth and other Portraits
Great Aunt Elisabeth visited us in May, and we took lots of pictures, including just stills of the girls.
- Ben's Spring Soccer Team: The Panthers
It was Ben's first season as a soccer player... and it was a perfect fit! He found out this sport was definitely his game!
He had a great coach named Jackson Penrod and the kids had a great season... and lots of fun.
- Ashley's Graduation from Courthouse Academy
Ashley had attended this preschool for 3 years... and she had a great year in Pre-K with very nurturing and caring teachers, Miss Sue and Miss Roberta. They worked with her especially hard becasue of her sensitivity and shyness. She came a long way!!
We were lucky to have Great Aunt Elisabeth here to witness the ceremony! And then Ashley attended the birthday party of a long time preschool friend, Ashlynn Whitehurst at the "Jumpin Monkey".
- Spring Visit to Purcellville, VA May 2006
We had fun at Omi and Opa's... jumping on the trampoline, and having a campfire out at the firepit Aunt Britt built with her friends. Great Aunt Gayle ans Great Omi Ruth were also there and we always love seeing them!! Great Omi is Heidi's grandmother (her mother's mother).

The kids enjoyed easter egg decorating with Grandma and Grandpa Thompson, and an easter egg hunt put on by our neighbors, the Freemans.

- Happy Second Birthday Sarah!!
An impromptu party with cupcakes and blowouts and neighbor friends: Sam Fuller, Jessie Freeman, Braydon and Chase Laviolette... all for our little Tinkerbell.
- Greg and Heidi's Trip To Orlando, Florida
Heidi's boss was kind enough to send us on a 4 day trip to Orlando. We had a great time visiting Busch Gardens in Tampa and Sea World. We enjoyed the resort area we stayed in... played tennis, went swimming, even tried playing volleyball with a hard, rotten ball that killed our arms! Another high point was visiting a murder mystery dinner theatre.
- A Quick Trip to Purcellville
Heidi's parents adopted dog Ian wasn't feeling well... turns out he had Lyme Disease, poor thing. But of course we took pictures during our visit.
- New Years Eve in Purcellville, VA
We had a wonderful time with family including Aunt Elisabeth and the "Swan Court Heilmans": James, Leslie, Jeremy and David.
- Christmas in Virginia Beach 2005
We celebrated Christmas a little early in December with Grandma and Grandpa Thompson, who came up to visit us from Raleigh.
Ben won a gingerbread house making kit by winning a raffle at school, and Daddy had fun decorating it with the kids. Christmas morning was wonderful, but Mommy got the flu, and spent almost the entire day in bed. Thank goodness there are no pictures capturing the agony.
Grandma Nancy made a very special puppet theatre for Ashley... all with her creative two hands!

We met Aunt Elisabeth for lunch.

- Ben's Fall Tee Ball Season
- Hallowscream at Busch Gardens
This is the first year we went to Busch Gardens around Halloween. They "dress the park up" with Halloween themes and it's actually pretty scary and fun. The kids enjoyed it. Grandma and Grandpa Thompson came along and joined in on the fun.
- Chesterfield Berry Farm (aka "The Pumpkin Patch")
Chesterfield Berry Farm is located outside of Richmond, Virginia and is the place where Greg went to pick his pumpkins as a boy... so lots of memories there. Since we were driving back near Richmond from Heidi's parents house we decided to take the kids there. We had a great time.
- Catching up with Chellie in Purcellville
It's unbelievable to think that Heidi hadn't seen Chellie Stull since 1998, when she was a bridesmaid in Chellie's wedding in Frederick, Maryland! Heidi and Chellie were classmates and friends in vet school. Chellie works for the FDA and lives not too far from Heidi's parents. It's a crime they haven't gotten together sooner. They planned a fun day at the Waterford Festival, but the rain POURED DOWN and it was a bust. They still had a good time catching up.
It was great to see Aunt Elisabeth, who also enjoyed her visit with the kids. She and Ashley seem to have a special bond
- Images of the Kids at Play
One thing the kids are good at.... PLAYING. Here are some images of the kids just out there having a good time.
- Beach Volleyball Snapshots
One's thing a constant in Greg's life... his passion for beach volleyball. And nothing makes him happier than seeing pictures of the action down there with his buddies. Here they are...
- Our First Camping Trip to North Landing Beach
We gave it a whirl... packed the kids up and drove down to Pungo and piched a tent right in front of the North Landing River. We had a great time UNTIL... we tried to put the kids in bed. The kids FREAKED OUT when mosquitoes invaded the tent and buzzed all around them. Needless to say we threw everyone in the car and drove home. Poor Greg had to drive back in the morning to take everything down on his own. Greg is such a great sport... no complaints, no grumbling.
- Greg Builds Heidi a Bed
He wanted a King sized mattress ('cause he's a bed HOG), so Heidi wanted a nice bed frame. Too bad the one she wanted was over a thousand dollars in the Restoration Hardware catalog. So, Greg said he could build it himself! And he delivered... the bed came out beautifully (BETTER than the picture)! And... at less than third of the catalog price.
- Ben's First Day of Kindergarten
Ben was excited to take the bus to school for the very first time!! But, OOOOPS, the bus BROKE DOWN and Miss Susan drove him to school. He was able to take the bus home, though, and we were able to catch a few images of the moment, of course.
- Visit to Raleigh and Hokie Football Game
We made a trip down to Raleigh for a visit... had fun at the park, saw Brian and Ellen's new house, and had great time watching the Hokies beat the Wolfpack after a fun tailgate with Mom and Dad. So sorry, Dad! Go HOKIES!
- Our Annual Trip to Nags Head with the Springers
We met up with Sam, Diane, and the boys at a nice beach house in Nags Head. We drove down there to find Sam with a broken wrist and horrible wave rash!! His operating hand too! He had to drive back to Chesapeake during the week to get that dealt with! BUMMER!
- Fun with Lief the Kitten
We tried to adopt the frisky and mischievious Lief, the orange tabby kitten. But he was a HUGE troublemaker. He stalked our cats, and made life miserable for old Gwen. It was a bust. But the kids enjoyed playing with his big ears and making fun of his cross eyes. He eventually found another home where he was the only cat in the house.
- Visit to Maymont Park in Richmond, Virginia
We have definitely started some family traditions. One of them is driving the kids out to Richmond to visit Maymont Park, a place where Greg worked just out of college. It's like a zoo, a museum, and botanical gardens all wrapped up into one. We love it and the kids sure enjoy it.

One of the highlights was going to the Nature Museum in Durham, and they also enjoyed going to the park. Grandma Nancy and Great Grammy Katherine met Heidi in Emporia, Virginia at the Cracker Barrel to pick the kids up.
- Fourth of July on Kern Court
We all enjoyed a cookout in the cul-de-sac with the neighbors, and the kids enjoyed the sparklers!
- Ashley's 4th Birthday: A Cinderella Party
Mom tried something different: she hired a beautician to come to the house and do a Cinderella birthday party. It was neat... the lady brought everything with her. The girls had to dress in rags and clean the house, then they received an invitation to a ball. They made their own magic wands, and got to choose dresses to wear to the ball. Then they had their nails done, and were presented to a very dashing Prince Greg at the end. Most of the girls were scared of Prince Greg. Mom thought he looked pretty good!!!

- Bahamas Cruise for Our 10th Anniversary
Wow... we made it to 10 years already! We celebrated by going on a 4 day cruise to the Bahamas. The weather wasn't the absolute best, and it was some national holiday the day we docked in Nassau (therefore all the stores were closed), but we had a great time and soaked in all the sights that we just don't get to see every day. We even ate raw conch meat! How's that for being "out- of- the- box"?
- Ben's Preschool Graduation
Ben survived Pre-K with Miss Sue and Miss Roberta! He had a great year, and loved hanging out with his best buddies Bryce Walsh and CJ Morris.

Meanwhile the kids had a good time back home with Grandma and Grandpa Thompson.
- Omi Jeanne and Baby Sarah
Omi likes to snuggle with Baby Sarah...
- Late Christmas Celebration in Raleigh, NC

We took very newborn Sarah up for her very first visit to Purcellville. Her great grandmother Omi Ruth and great aunt Gayle were there to see her for the first time. We also had fun at the Middleburg Horse Races. After all, it is horse country out there.

We didn't take ANY pictures of the circus in Norfolk (I don't think we were ALLOWED to), but we took pictures of ourselves spectating.
- A Trip to Charleston, SC
Heidi attended a veterinary conference in Charleston, SC... Greg flew down to join her for the weekend. We didn't take a lot of pictures, but we had so much fun walking (in Heidi's case, waddling) through the historic streets, enjoying a carriage ride, and investigating the aquarium and civil war museum. We also saw a 3-D presentation of a documentary on the Titanic sinking.

- Prego Heidi and the New House....
Don't have many pictures of my pregnancies. I gained about 60 pounds with Ben, but who was counting? My parents were building their dream house and we paid a visit to see the progress.
- Snow Days and Skiing in College
Back in February of 1993 (so many years ago) Greg and I went to Snowshoe, WV on a skiing trip. Greg made fun of my skiing skills and I've been scarred for life. Later, back at the Virginia Tech campus, we faced a blizzard that shut the whole University down.
- A Tribute to Katherine Watkins Schneider Wolf
Some snapshots of a our cherished memories with Greg's maternal grandmother (aka "Grammy"). She was warm, funny, smart, generous and always interested and involved with our family. The kids adored her, as did we. We love and miss you, Grammy.
- A Tribute to Ruth Henriette Lubert Gordon
Some pictures of my beautiful grandmother, or"Omi", as we all called her. She passed away after a long battle with Parkinsons on January 17, 2008. As the pictures show, she was a woman of beauty and many amazing talents. She loved music, travel, laughing, and all of her children (6), grandchildren (10 biological, 4 step), and great grandchildren (6).
She loved the song Ave Maria. Every time I hear it I think of her, and her voice.
Ich liebe dich, Omi!
- A Tribute to Wilma Ileen Cross Heilman
A group of pictures in honor of Heidi's sweet paternal grandmother who passed on May 30, 2008. She was wonderfully smart and dedicated to her family. We were so lucky to have had a treasured visit with her and her great grandchildren in November of last year.

You can't run away from your past,... and this is mine!
(Beware, Greg, you're next...)
- Greg's College Dorm Days
Greg may be furious when he sees this slideshow... here are only SOME of the pictures I unearthed from Greg's collection of pictures he has from life in East Ambler Johnston Dormitory at Virginia Tech, ca 1989-90. Some pictures had to be omitted for various reasons... obscene gestures, previous girlfriends (don't want the kids to ask... who was THAT???), and other interesting moments caught on film, but... it was an interesting time.
- Greg's Family Tree
I'm going to slowly add older family photos of Greg's family as I scan them in....
- Heidi's College Dorm Days
I have (HAD?) a whole photo album filled with pictures from my one year living at West Ambler Johnston Dormitory at Virginia Tech in 1990. Where did it go??? I hope it isn't lost. But I did scrounge up a few strays that weren't in there. BEWARE... it was the first year out of the 80's and big hair was STILL "IN"...
- Heidi's College Graduation
Heidi graduated from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor of Science degree in Wildlife Sciences in May, 1993.
- Heidi's Vet School Days
It was a whole 4 years of my life... 1993 to 1997, down there at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. I'm surprised that I don't have more pictures.. guess I was actually pretty busy studying and training...
This year (2007) is my 10th year anniversary. WOW. Seems so long ago.

- My 365 Day Photo Project: 2010
I decided (foolishly) to try to embark on a project of taking a photograph every day for a year. The hope is to give me more practice, and to stretch my ideas of what subjects that I encounter on a daily basis that could make an interesting photo. It has definitely been a challenge.

- The Snaphappy Shuttermamas Gallery
A love of our digital cameras and a desire to learn more about them were the driving forces behind forming a photography group called "The Snaphappy Shuttermamas." Nothing is more fun than sharing our visions through assignments that force us to explore our creative side, and see what we come up with. Let the adventure begin!
